3. Codenames Duet (2017)
To those who are not familiar with Codenames, it is a very popular party game, where 2 teams are trying to solve a word puzzle as fast as they can. The board is made of a 5x5 grid of cards, where each one shows a unique word. The team’s leader gives a one-word clue, trying to point to multiple words on the board. Then their teammates must guess the correct words, while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. Now, Codenames Duet uses just the same core mechanism, but has a totally different feel, because it’s a game for 2 players only and this time they’re working together! It’s a simple and fun game that plays in less than thirty minutes.

4. Jaipur (2009)
In this fast-paced, trading game, each player is buying, exchanging, and selling goods in the city of Jaipur, competing for the recognition of the best trader! Your turn is simple; you can either take goods or camels from the market or you can sell goods for getting chips (victory points). The trick here is that the chips' values decrease as the game progresses, so you have to sell fast, but on the other hand, you receive increasingly high rewards for selling multiple cards of the same good at a time. If you manage to balance these then you may have a chance for the trader’s title!

5. Pagoda (2014)
This game takes us back to old times of East Asia, where 2 players compete to build ancient pagodas! Players must use their cards wisely in order to construct pillars, floors and roofs for each pagoda, scoring the most points out of it. Each round is very simple, there’s an excellent balance between strategy & luck and it has beautiful game-growth as the game progresses. Highly recommended!

Ένα τέλος, μια αρχή.

Κάθε που τελειώνει, κοιτάζω λίγο πίσω στην αρχή του, ζυγίζω και αναπολώ.
Και, αναπόφευκτα, απορώ.
Έφυγαν τόσο γρήγορα όλες αυτές οι μέρες που ήτανε να 'ρθούνε..
Όλα εκείνα που είπαμε θα κάνουμε, ήρθανε, μα έμειναν μισά..
Ελάχιστα προλάβαμε και λίγο τα χαρήκαμε, μα τι να κάνεις, έτσι πάνε πλέον αυτά..
Είναι που η ζωή, ο χρόνος, έχει την τάση να μικραίνει σαν πυραμίδα.
Απ' αυτές που θες δε θες τη σκαρφαλώνεις.
Μα τουλάχιστον νιώθω ευγνώμων που, για μια φορά ακόμη, έχω τη δυνατότητα να φιλτράρω στο μυαλό μου όλες αυτές τις αναμνήσεις· καλές και κακές, ωραίες και δύσκολες...
Νιώθω ευγνώμων που έφτασα κι εγώ σ' ένα ακόμη τέλος· που έχω τη δυνατότητα ν' αφήσω τις ευχές μου για μια νέα αρχή.
Για όλα αυτά που ελάχιστα προλάβαμε, γι' αυτά που χάρηκα, μα ήταν για λίγο,
για όλα εκείνα που είπαμε θα κάνουμε, μα κάπως έμειναν μισά,
για όλα όσα θα έρθουν να σκεπάσουν τα παλιά,
υγεία· και καλή χρονιά.

A board game evening with: Secrets

   Last weekend, five of my friends and I were in a mood for a party game with secret roles. Instead of playing one of our classics, we thought about trying a new one; and that’s how I ended up reading Secrets’ rulebook... Now, Secrets is a 4-8 players, fast and simple-bluff game with a lot of “push your luck”, “deduction” and “take that” elements. The general idea is that most of the information is hidden and what you’re basically trying to do is to understand the players’ identities in order to give the right cards to the right ones.
   At the beginning of the game, players are assigned a hidden identity token from either the CIA or the KGB team and they’re trying to collect as many points as they can, via cards that they offer to each other. Additionally, one player assumes the role of an anti-establishment Hippie who is working for himself and his goal is to have the fewest points when the game ends. Of course, no one knows who their teammates are or who the Hippie might be and here’s where the fun starts! Let me explain a little more.
   On your turn, you randomly draw 2 agent cards and you choose 1 to offer face-down to another player. These cards are worth +/- points and have varying good or bad abilities, which ultimately give information to the players about what’s going on... The player who receives the card can either accept/flip it, in which case they score it, or refuse it, in which case the card returns to you and you score it. The game ends when a player has collected 5 cards, after which the identities are revealed; the two teams sum up their scores and the highest one wins unless the Hippie has the single lowest score, in which case they win! Sounds fun, right? Well, after a couple of rounds we started losing our interest in the game.
   The game idea is fun indeed and the game components are of great quality, which is very positive for the whole experience! But on the other hand, the game's strategic part is so simple that, while this makes it easy to teach and accessible to casual gamers, it also feels like it lacks substance. There's no pro-play, super-clever move or best strategy. The game ends in 30-40’ or so and you can never know all the information you might want for planning your actions. So, in many turns, you end up doing random offers, having the illusion of an actual strategy. The bluffing part of the game is fun, but to us it seemed like there’s too much randomness, coming from the mix of luck and a lot of secrets.

Final thoughts:
   Fair enough for a light party game and a good introduction game to new gamers for the genre. Although, if you’re looking for something deeper strategically, more complex and engaging, then I guess you should look somewhere else.

Περί ορέξεως, κολοκυθοτυρόπιτα!

Το φαγητό. Τι να πω, γενικά όλες αυτές οι βιολογικές ανάγκες πάντα με κούραζαν και ίσως εγώ είμαι ο περίεργος, αλλά έτσι έχουν τα πράγματα, το ομολογώ. Μ' ενοχλεί και μ' εκνευρίζει μερικές φορές όταν βιάζομαι να φύγω, το ότι πρέπει να καθυστερήσω για να φάω ή το να πρέπει να λύσω το πρόβλημα της πείνας μου εκτός σπιτιού. Από πάντα αντιμετώπιζα το φαγητό πρώτα ως ανάγκη και ύστερα ως απόλαυση· ως πρόβλημα, παρά ως διαδικασία. Και αν δεν έχω διαφωνήσει γι' αυτό το θέμα...

Με τα χρόνια άρχισα να τα τρώω όλα ή σχεδόν όλα ας πούμε καλύτερα, καθότι ακρίδες, βατραχοπόδαρα και άλλες τέτοιες προκλητικές κουζίνες δεν έχω δοκιμάσει (ακόμα). Αλλά όλα τα πιθανά πιάτα ενός ελληνικού τραπεζιού τα τρώω. Κινέζικα, σούσια, μεξικάνικα, ινδικά, ανατολίτικα γενικά, τα τρώμε κι αυτά ευχάριστα, θα έλεγα. Προφανώς, όμως, δε μου αρέσουν όλα όσα τρώω. Έχω κι εγώ, όπως όλοι, τις προτιμήσεις μου. Βέβαια, προτιμώ ιδανικά ν΄αποφεύγω τις επιλογές, με σκοπό να διευκολύνω τους γύρω μου που θέλουν να τις έχουν, αλλά αν ντε και καλά έχω να διαλέξω ανάμεσα σε δύο διαφορετικά φαγητά, φυσικά και θα επιλέξω το νοστιμότερο. Παρ' όλα αυτά, δε θεωρώ καθόλου ότι το ένα έχει να κάνει με το άλλο. Θα φάω ένα πιάτο φασολάδα μέχρι και το τελευταίο φασόλι, χωρίς καμία δυσανασχέτηση· γιατί πεινάω. Όμως, δε μου αρέσει καθόλου η φασολάδα και ούτε πρόκειται να τη ζητήσω ποτέ. Τόσο περίεργο είναι? Οι άλλοι δηλαδή που την τρώνε τι είναι, ικανότεροι? Αφού υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που τρώνε ένα φαγητό το τρώω κι εγώ. Αν δεν το φάω επειδή δε μου αρέσει, καταρχάς, χάνω την ευκαιρία να πάρω όλες τις πιθανές θρεπτικές ουσίες του και κατά δεύτερον, μόνο πρόβλημα μου δημιουργώ, καθώς θα πρέπει εκείνη την ώρα να βρω κάτι άλλο να φάω. Στην καλύτερη δημιουργώ πρόβλημα στους γύρω μου που θα θελήσουν να με βγάλουν απ' τη δύσκολη θέση, ετοιμάζοντάς μου κάτι διαφορετικό. Ε όχι ρε φίλε, δεν το δέχομαι· μπορείς να φας εσύ μελιτζάνες, μπάμιες και σαλιγκάρια(?), μπορώ κι εγώ!
Και κάπως έτσι φτάσαμε στο σήμερα, όπου με τα χρόνια, πολλά από αυτά που απλά έτρωγα άρχισαν να μου αρέσουν κιόλας και κατάφερα να "απελευθερωθώ" απ' την ανθρώπινη διάθεσή μου να τρώω πράγματα που δεν κάνουν καλό, αλλά είναι απλά ωραία/γευστικά (γιατί προφανώς και τα πιο ωραία πράγματα δεν κάνουν καλό). Όχι, δε χρειάζομαι κάτι που είναι απλά ωραίο, όπως το/η κέτσαπ μαζί με τις πατάτες μου, τη ζάχαρη στον καφέ, τα αλλαντικά ή το μπόλικο αλάτι. Η ζάχαρη, το/η κέτσαπ και τα συναφή κοπήκανε μαχαίρι, τα αλλαντικά μειώθηκαν το κατά δύναμη και το αλάτι μπαίνει από ελάχιστο έως καθόλου αν είναι να μαγειρέψω εγώ (ένας κύβος maggi μου φτάνει και μου περισσεύει).

Οπότε, ακόμη πιο ακραία πλέον, γιατί με δέρνει και μια τεμπελίτιδα σε τέτοια θέματα, μπορώ μεν να απολαύσω και να ξεχωρίσω μια καλή, πλούσια σε γεύση μακαρονάδα με τα μανιταράκια της και τα λοιπά της, αλλά έτσι και πω να μαγειρέψω εγώ για μένα, δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να βάλω τίποτα μέσα, παρά μόνο μία σκέτη σάλτσα με έναν κύβο. Θα ασχοληθώ περισσότερο με το να ετοιμάσω ποσότητα, έτσι ώστε να έχει και για το βράδυ... :)
Πιστεύω αν το φαγητό ήταν απλά απόλαυση στα πλαίσια διασκέδασης και δεν είχε καμία σχέση με την επιβίωση του ανθρώπου, θα το έκανα δυο-τρεις φορές τον χρόνο, όπως το να πάω σινεμά.
Θα κλείσω με τη γνωστή φράση "αν δεν μπορείς να αποφύγεις έναν βιασμό κάτσε κι απόλαυσέ τον". Νομίζω καθρεφτίζει με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο τη γενικότερη εικόνα μου απέναντι στο συγκεκριμένο θέμα.
Αυτά περί φαγητού και ζητώ συγνώμη αν σας άνοιξα πρόωρα την όρεξη.
